Interstate fans heading to Melbourne for Saturday's AFL grand final are turning to unconventional travel options as commercial airfares climb, with some booking private jet charters instead. One group secured an empty-leg flight on a six-seat private jet for a return trip from Melbourne to the Gold Coast, departing Sunday morning.

The group paid $5,000 in total for the charter, working out to approximately $833 per person.

Empty-leg charters exist because aircraft often need to reposition after dropping passengers at a destination, and operators discount these otherwise-empty return flights to recover some cost rather than fly them for free. A major single-city event like a grand final concentrates demand for both seats and dates, which is exactly the condition under which an empty leg can undercut a full-fare commercial ticket.

The per-person price only works because the six seats were filled by one group travelling together on the same fixed schedule as the aircraft's existing repositioning route. Whether this kind of pricing recurs depends on how many other operators have aircraft returning from Melbourne on similar dates, and whether commercial airfares stay elevated enough to keep private charter competitive by comparison.
