Tropical Storm Marie to Bring Dangerous Surf and Possible Light Rain to Southern California Over Labor Day Weekend

Why It MattersCoastal weather volatility from offshore Pacific storms adds an operational planning variable for regional aviation and ground-support activity near affected beach communities.

Tropical Storm Marie, churning in the Pacific Ocean several hundred miles off Mexico's coast, will not make direct landfall in Southern California but is expected to significantly affect the region's weather and beaches over Labor Day weekend. National Weather Service meteorologist Rich Thompson said Marie is forecast to reach hurricane strength by Thursday morning while continuing to track northwest, away from North America.

Despite the offshore track, a large southerly swell is expected to bring dangerously strong rip currents, big waves along south-facing beaches, and possible coastal flooding, with the swell forecast to peak on Sunday and Monday. Last weekend, more than one million people visited Los Angeles County beaches, and lifeguards performed more than 1,200 ocean rescues and responded to nearly 400 medical emergencies amid already-elevated surf; large holiday crowds are expected to return this weekend. Beachgoers are advised to stay near occupied lifeguard posts, heed warnings, avoid jetties and rocks, and swim parallel to shore before angling toward the beach if caught in a rip current.

Marie will also push moisture into the region, bringing cloud cover and roughly a 50% chance of half an inch of rain or less, not enough to trigger mudslides or meaningfully hydrate vegetation. Thompson cautioned that forecasts could shift if the storm's track changes even slightly, with a track closer to North America increasing rainfall and worsening ocean conditions, and a track further away reducing them.
