Saudi Arabia Suspends US Military Access to Bases and Airspace Amid Iran Diplomacy Push

Why It MattersReduced US military basing access in Saudi Arabia and continued regional strikes add operational risk considerations for business aviation transiting Gulf and Levant airspace.

Saudi Arabia has suspended US military access to its bases and airspace, a move that halts the US operation known as Project Freedom before it gained traction and deals a setback to Washington's Gulf strategy. The suspension comes as the Trump administration pursues diplomacy with Iran, with Trump calling recent talks "very good" and saying a permanent deal is "very possible." Iran is reviewing a 14-point US proposal that would pause hostilities and open a 30-day window for final negotiations, deferring core issues such as Iran's nuclear programme to later talks; Washington says it expects an Iranian response imminently.

Iran has not publicly confirmed acceptance of any terms. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called for dialogue and diplomacy, while parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf dismissed some media reports on the matter as fake.

Fighting across the region continues. Israel bombed Beirut's southern suburbs on Wednesday, described as the first strike on the Lebanese capital since a US-brokered ceasefire nominally took effect on April 17. In southern Lebanon, an Israeli air raid on the town of Harouf killed one person and injured three, while strikes on Ad-Doueir destroyed the town square, damaged a mosque, and killed at least one additional person. The Israeli military said its operations target Hezbollah infrastructure and fighters. In Gaza, Israeli strikes have continued, with Hamas condemning them as part of what it calls Israel's war of extermination, as mediators continue shuttling proposals between the parties.
