South Korea's K-UAM Safety Operations Demonstration Project to Launch in 2027

South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on September 1, 2026 that its "K-UAM Safety Operations System Demonstration Technology Development" project has cleared a national research and development preliminary feasibility review and will officially launch in 2027. The project builds on the "K-UAM Safety Operations System Core Technology Development" initiative that began in 2024, and aims to integrate and verify traffic management, flight information, weather services and vertiport systems in real operating environments to support a safety operations system suitable for commercial service.
The ministry will oversee overall safety operations technology development, the Korea Meteorological Administration will handle weather observation and forecasting technology, and the city of Ulsan will build the demonstration environment. The ministry is targeting the launch of initial UAM commercial services in 2028, covering regional connections, tourism, airport links and public healthcare, while developing the regulatory, infrastructure and workforce foundations needed for commercialization, with the goal of UAM entering urban airspace by 2032.
Park Jun-hyung, director general of the ministry's Mobility and Automotive Bureau, described the project as an important turning point connecting UAM technology development to actual operations and services, and pledged close cooperation with relevant agencies to prepare for initial commercialization in 2028.
