Blackhawk Group Launches Fixed-Cost PT6A Engine Exchange Program with Two-to-Three-Day Turnaround
Why It MattersFixed-cost engine exchange programs shift turbine maintenance away from unpredictable overhaul timelines toward inventory-backed swaps, reducing aircraft-on-ground risk for operators who prioritize schedule certainty over performance upgrades.
What happened
The Blackhawt Group has launched an Engine Exchange program that supplies ready-to-install, fixed-cost PT6A engines overhauled through Pratt & Whitney Canada's Designated Overhaul Facility (DOF) network, with installation available in as little as two to three days at Blackhawk's global network of Performance Centers.

Because operators install the same engine type their airframe was originally certified to fly, no supplemental type certificate is required. Pre-overhauled PT6A engines are held in stock and ready to ship, and owners receive financial credit for trading in their existing engine core. Blackhawk is also purchasing serviceable PT6A cores on the open market to maintain exchange inventory. Dale Morrow, Vice President of Blackhawk's Engine Exchange, said, "Blackhawk has set itself apart in the industry by replacing timed-out engines with new, more powerful engines that increase performance. We now offer solutions for operators that want to retain their same engine type but cannot afford the uncertainty and downtime associated with overhauling an engine today."
The Engine Exchange joins two other maintenance paths under the Blackhawk umbrella: the Engine+ Upgrade, which installs factory-new, higher-horsepower engines to increase cruise speed, payload, and resale value; and Overhaul Management, which provides end-to-end technical guidance and shop oversight for operators who need to retain their original engine serial numbers. The Blackhawk Group was formed in 2022 by combining industry brands including Blackhawk, AVEX, and Finnoff, and offers engine, avionics, and aircraft upgrades as well as maintenance and brokerage services for the light turbine aircraft sector.
Industry impact & what to watch
This program sits alongside a broader trend of turbine MRO providers moving from time-and-materials overhaul work toward fixed-price, inventory-backed exchange models that trade flexibility for schedule certainty. Traditional PT6A overhauls expose operators to variable costs and open-ended aircraft-on-ground time once a shop opens an engine and finds unexpected wear; an exchange model instead sets price and turnaround before the swap begins, backed by a stock of pre-overhauled engines and a core-trade-in credit.
The light turbine segment generally prices engine work around two variables operators care most about: predictability of cost and predictability of downtime. Holding ready-to-install engines in inventory, and buying serviceable cores on the open market to replenish that stock, is what makes the two-to-three-day installation window possible, since the overhaul work happens off the operator's timeline rather than on it.
What remains to be seen is how exchange pricing and core-credit values compare across a range of PT6A variants and engine conditions, and whether Blackhawk's Performance Center network can sustain two-to-three-day turnarounds as exchange volume grows alongside its existing Engine+ Upgrade and Overhaul Management offerings.
