Falcon 8X Archange Flies Test Sortie From Istres as France Rebuilds Airborne SIGINT Capability

Why It MattersThe programme shows military intelligence roles being built on business-jet airframes, giving Falcon 8X platforms a defence mission line alongside their conventional executive-transport market.

A test flight tracked from Istres Air Base in southern France has drawn attention to France's Archange airborne signals intelligence (SIGINT) programme. Flight-tracking data displayed the aircraft as a Dassault Falcon 8X Archange, registration F-ZJFM, which flew west across southern France after manoeuvring in the Istres area. The aircraft's precise identity requires further verification, and the tracking data alone cannot establish the specific purpose of the sortie.

Archange is based on the Dassault Falcon 8X business jet and is designed to detect, collect and analyse electromagnetic emissions, including radar signals and communications. Dassault Aviation and Thales are developing it under the supervision of the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA). Its mission systems are intended to give French forces a more detailed picture of an adversary's electronic order of battle, helping to identify radar installations, communication networks and other military activity.

Archange is meant to replace the capability formerly provided by the Transall C-160G Gabriel, which was retired in 2022, leaving a significant gap in France's dedicated airborne electronic intelligence capacity. French defence authorities plan three aircraft, with deliveries expected towards the end of the 2024–2030 military programming period. The key milestone ahead is the transition from experimental flying to operational service.
