SkyDrive and MUFG Bank Launch Joint Initiative to Advance Commercial eVTOL Operations in Japan's Kansai Region
Why It MattersThe initiative signals eVTOL development in Japan shifting from demonstration flights toward formal infrastructure and operational frameworks ahead of commercial air mobility rollout.
Japanese eVTOL manufacturer SkyDrive has announced a joint initiative with MUFG Bank and key industry partners across the Kansai region to evaluate and advance the commercial deployment and operational framework for eVTOL aircraft in Western Japan. The consortium spans transportation, aviation, infrastructure, energy, tourism and financial services.

The initiative follows SkyDrive's demonstration flights of its SD-05 eVTOL aircraft during Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. With the Expo concluded, advanced air mobility efforts in Kansai are shifting from technical validation to commercial integration, with steps to incorporate eVTOLs into daily urban transportation accelerating across Osaka and the broader Kansai region.
As part of a Cabinet Office Super City research project, SkyDrive is collaborating with Osaka Metro and other partners to study converting existing rooftop emergency helipads on urban buildings into vertiports. This effort has been formalised under the "Kansai Air Transportation Network Concept," a collaborative framework supporting new industry development and air mobility infrastructure originating in Kansai. SkyDrive will leverage the backing of MUFG Bank and its partner companies to accelerate execution of the network concept.
