Consultancy ALTEA White Paper Flags 'Fundamental Tension' Blocking New Electric and Hybrid Regional Aircraft

Why It MattersUnresolved questions over certification timelines, battery residual values and infrastructure financing could determine which electric and hybrid regional aircraft programs survive.

A newly released white paper by consultancy firm ALTEA has identified a structural dilemma facing the market for electric and hybrid aircraft under 30 seats: the routes with the greatest need for alternative-propulsion technology are often those least able to absorb the risk of new technology failures. ALTEA associate and former Eastern Airways executive Chris Holliday said the firm observed a "fundamental tension" in the sector. The white paper examines technologies being developed by Heart Aerospace, BETA Technologies, Electra, Ampaire, ZeroAvia, Aura Aero, Vaeridion, Elysian, JEKTA and others.

ALTEA noted that clean-sheet aircraft programmes can take eight to ten years to certify, a timeframe at odds with the quicker returns typically expected by venture capital investors, adding uncertainty beyond the technological challenges already involved.

On the aftermarket side, ALTEA cited BETA Technologies as an example, noting that an aircraft operating for 20 years could require 18 to 20 sets of replacement batteries. With no pre-existing market for electric and hybrid regional aircraft, open questions remain around real-world maintenance costs, battery degradation, battery ownership and residual values. Holliday said the answers to who carries the downside risk if battery residual-value assumptions prove incorrect, what data manufacturers should provide to appraisers and lessors, and who should finance the required infrastructure "could determine not only which aircraft programs survive, but whether the technology ultimately reaches the regional communities it is designed to serve."
