Electra's EL-2 Electric Hybrid Aircraft Demonstrates Ultra-Short 150-Foot Takeoff and Landing in Henrico, Virginia

An electric-powered hybrid aircraft called the EL-2, developed by Virginia-based company Electra, landed at a drag strip in eastern Henrico County near Richmond International Airport to demonstrate ultra-short takeoff and landing technology. The yellow aircraft requires only 150 feet of runway to take off and land, far less than the 1,000 to 2,000 feet needed by a conventional plane of similar size and a fraction of the nearly one mile required by commercial aircraft.

JP Stewart, Electra's senior vice president of product development, said the EL-2 is also capable of flying in all weather conditions, including icing, while carrying multiple passengers over regional distances. "No other airplane can do that with this many people with instrument capabilities to be able to fly in all weather in icing and also to be able to fly these regional ranges," Stewart said.
The Henrico drag strip was chosen for the demonstration specifically to highlight the aircraft's ability to operate from non-traditional locations. Stewart described the concept as "direct aviation" — bringing air travel closer to where people live, work, and spend time, not just at conventional airports.
