Heven AeroTech Opens 56,000-Sq-Ft Hydrogen Drone Facility in Virginia in 90 Days

Heven AeroTech has opened a 56,000-square-foot production facility in Winchester, Virginia, completing the build-out in under 90 days and marking the company's first East Coast manufacturing operation. The site joins the company's existing manufacturing base in the Columbia River Gorge and is described as the anchor of a planned nationwide network for producing hydrogen-powered unmanned aircraft systems.

The Virginia facility will manufacture the Z1, a vertical takeoff and landing hydrogen-powered drone listed on the Defense Innovation Unit's Blue UAS Select list. According to the company, the Z1 can fly for more than 10 hours, carry payloads of up to 10 pounds, has a maximum takeoff weight of 55 pounds, and cruises at 64 mph. The aircraft supports intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, infrastructure monitoring, and emergency response missions, with a modular design allowing payload changes between assignments.

Bentzion Levinson, Founder and CEO of Heven AeroTech, said the coast-to-coast manufacturing network "transitions hydrogen-powered UAS from boutique production to an industrialized, highly repeatable capability." Michael Buscher, President of Heven AeroTech USA, said the 90-day build-out demonstrates that domestic UAS manufacturing can move at "tactical speed" to meet defense partner requirements. The company plans to use the Winchester site as a model for additional facilities nationwide, with long-term plans for hydrogen research laboratories, automated manufacturing systems, and space for other technology providers. Heven AeroTech expects the network to create hundreds of jobs across the country, and hiring has already begun in Virginia across aircraft assembly, quality control, and supply chain management roles. Founded in 2019, Heven AeroTech is headquartered in Sterling, Virginia, and develops hydrogen-powered drones for defense, public safety, logistics, and long-duration operations.

This build-out belongs to a broader push in defense-adjacent UAS manufacturing to prove that domestic production can scale quickly rather than remain limited to hand-built, low-volume runs. A facility standing within 90 days, positioned as a template for further sites, is itself the claim being tested: that hydrogen-powered drone production can be replicated across locations rather than concentrated in one plant.

Hydrogen propulsion in this segment competes on endurance rather than price, and the Z1's stated flight time and payload figures matter because defense and public-safety buyers weigh mission duration against battery-electric alternatives when selecting platforms already qualified through channels like the Blue UAS Select list. Manufacturing footprint and speed of scale-up become part of that qualification story alongside aircraft performance.
