A hybrid-electric aircraft capable of taking off and landing in as little as 150 feet touched down at Newport News/Williamsburg Airport (PHF) on Tuesday, demonstrating potential applications for future regional air travel. The aircraft, Electra's EL2 Ultra Short technology demonstrator, combined blown-lift technology with hybrid-electric propulsion to achieve its ultra-short takeoff and landing capability, allowing it to operate from short runways, open spaces, and converted parking lots.

The PHF stop was part of a four-day, seven-stop flight network across Virginia. Electra flew the EL2 from the National Capital Region to Newport News and then on to Richmond, simulating high-demand regional routes. The company says its planned EL9 aircraft could connect Newport News directly with Washington, D.C., and Richmond, potentially cutting travel times significantly.
The demonstration was coordinated with the Virginia Department of Aviation, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and the Federal Aviation Administration. Local officials said the event could also help attract aerospace investment, create jobs, and position Newport News/Williamsburg Airport as a hub for emerging aviation technology.
