The United States Air Force is set to acquire a VIP-configured Boeing 737 MAX 8, which will become the first military variant of the aircraft type. The aircraft will be procured directly through Boeing, though no delivery timeline has been announced.
Air Mobility Command posted a solicitation in July for training services to support the induction and operation of a 737 MAX 8, citing the requirement as urgent. The associated training contract is expected to take effect on November 1.
The Air Force currently operates a total of thirteen C-40 aircraft — four C-40Bs and nine C-40Cs. Previous plans to replace these with MAX variants had been blocked. Separately, in 2025 the service explored acquiring Boeing 737-9 aircraft, which were expected to be designated C-40D, to expand the existing fleet of four Boeing 757-200s designated C-32A. For that programme, the contract award was scheduled for September 2025, with delivery anticipated in August 2028, using USD 329 million allocated under the fiscal year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act.
