European Commission Opens Public Consultation on Airport Noise Rules, Deadline 19 November 2026

The European Commission opened a public consultation on 27 August 2026 examining how European Union rules governing noise-related operating restrictions at major airports are functioning. The consultation feeds into an upcoming evaluation of the Balanced Approach Regulation, which sets out the process EU member states must follow when considering restrictions linked to aircraft noise.

Under the regulation, member states planning to address noise concerns must weigh a range of measures before imposing air traffic restrictions and must consult relevant stakeholders during decision-making. Operating restrictions covered by the regulation include measures such as night-flight curfews and caps on certain types of aircraft.

Responses can be submitted through the Commission's "Have your Say" portal, which is available in all official EU languages. The deadline for contributions is 19 November 2026.

This consultation belongs to the routine cycle by which the EU revisits existing regulations to check whether their stated process still matches how member states and airports actually apply it in practice.
