U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany, the Republican nominee for Wisconsin governor, said he and his pilot sustained minor injuries after their plane lost power and made an emergency water landing on Lake Wausau in central Wisconsin late Saturday night. Tiffany said the incident occurred as he was returning from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner.
As the aircraft approached Wausau Downtown Airport, it lost power, and the pilot brought it down on the lake. As the plane began to submerge, both Tiffany and the pilot exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where they waited for emergency responders to reach them by boat. Both were transported to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where Tiffany said they received care and sustained only minor injuries.
Tiffany, endorsed by President Donald Trump, represents Wisconsin's seventh Congressional District and won the Republican nomination in August. He is set to face Democratic nominee David Crowley, the Milwaukee County Executive, in the November 3 gubernatorial election. Crowley said he was relieved no one was seriously hurt, calling it "a horrifying incident, which could have been a tragedy if not for the heroism of the pilot."
