What happened
Israel has developed the ELLYON, a multi-mission aircraft that combines electronic attack (EA) with intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities on a Bombardier Global 6500 airframe. The aircraft is designed for stand-off operations from hundreds of kilometres, reducing platform exposure while performing radar and communications jamming, signals intelligence (SIGINT) collection, and electronic countermeasures within a single sortie. The Global 6500 was selected for its speed, altitude and range characteristics, and the system is described as platform-agnostic and capable of integration on other large business jets.

The ISTAR suite is built around a multi-mode Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar supplied by IAI ELTA, described as operationally proven, providing synthetic aperture radar strip and spot imaging, ground moving target indication, air-to-sea coverage including inverse synthetic aperture radar, and air-to-air modes. The electronic attack suite includes Global Navigation Satellite System jamming, communications jamming and an AESA radar jammer. A multispectral long-range electro-optical and infrared payload supports target classification, alongside long-range oblique photography.
An AI-enabled mission management system fuses onboard sensor data and transmits intelligence outputs in real time via wideband satellite communications to command centres, ground control stations and other airborne assets. The system supports four to six operator stations and applies machine learning to detect, classify and prioritise threats. For self-protection in contested environments, the aircraft carries a Missile Approach Warning System, a Radar Warning Receiver, Directed Infrared Countermeasures, and chaff and flare dispensers, along with secure HF, VHF and UHF radios, a tactical datalink, and both line-of-sight and SATCOM links.
The ELLYON's mission set includes suppression of enemy air assets and air defences, electronic order of battle development, early threat detection, battle damage assessment and target generation. The aircraft architecture is described as open to future upgrades and is said to be manned-unmanned teaming ready.

The ELLYON belongs to a broader effort to repurpose large-cabin business jets as sensor and electronic-warfare carriers, trading purpose-built military airframes for the range, altitude and operating economics of aircraft like the Global 6500. Framing the system as platform-agnostic, capable of integration on other large business jets, points to a design philosophy where the mission suite, not the airframe, is the exportable product.
In this segment, the business case rests on stand-off distance and multi-role fusion: a single sortie combining EA, SIGINT and ISTAR reduces the number of airframes and sorties a customer needs, while the AI-enabled mission management system with four to six operator stations shifts crew workload toward data triage rather than raw sensor operation. Self-protection systems such as missile warning and directed countermeasures indicate the aircraft is intended to operate near, not only far from, contested airspace despite its stand-off design intent.
Whether the ELLYON gains customers beyond Israel will depend on how the manned-unmanned teaming readiness and open architecture are demonstrated in service, and on which air forces or government operators commit to the Global 6500 as their base platform for this mission class.
