She added that flight-planned altitudes are not guaranteed and that any altitude change or course deviation requires a formal request and clearance from controllers: "If you are given a deviation, you are expected to rejoin your route. If you want to proceed to a fix ahead, you must make a request and receive a clearance."

Gorman said pilots should seek clarification from controllers rather than act on assumptions. "I'd rather they'd ask a question than just do what they think is correct and end up with a pilot deviation or a loss of separation with another aircraft," she said. Safety experts recommended that flight departments adopt a dual-independent verification process requiring both pilots to identify and agree on any course change entered into the flight management system before finalizing it, alongside robust standard operating procedures and checklists.
