London to Nice by Private Jet: Airports, Flight Times and Options on a Busy Riviera Route

Why It MattersThe route shows that Riviera private aviation is limited less by aircraft supply than by slot coordination, runway restrictions and parking at Nice and Cannes, especially during event weeks and summer weekends.

What happened

London to the Côte d'Azur is among the busiest private jet routes in Europe. The distance is about 560 nautical miles (roughly 1,040 km), and flight time is typically 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes, depending on aircraft, winds and air traffic routing across France. With prevailing westerlies, the return leg is often slightly longer.

Departure airports around London include Farnborough (EGLF), which has a 2,440 m runway and operates under planning limits including a cap of 50,000 movements a year. London Biggin Hill (EGKB) has a runway of about 1,800 m and fixed hours of 06:30-23:00 on weekdays and 08:00-22:00 at weekends. London Luton (EGGW) has a 2,160 m runway. London City is closest to the financial district, but its 5.5-degree approach is restricted to approved aircraft types, operators and crews.

At the destination end, Nice Côte d'Azur (LFMN) is the main Riviera airport and the usual choice for Monaco. It has two parallel runways, the longer about 2,960 m, a dedicated business aviation terminal and border control. It is slot coordinated, so each private flight needs an allocated arrival and departure time, which can be scarce in peak weeks. Cannes Mandelieu (LFMD) serves general and business aviation only, with a main runway of about 1,600 m. Jets must have a maximum take-off weight below 35 tonnes, raised from 22 tonnes in 2015, and older, noisier types are excluded.

Aircraft choice for the route

For four passengers with weekend luggage, a light jet such as the Embraer Phenom 300E, with a range of about 2,010 nm and a cruise speed of about 464 knots, is usually suitable. A midsize jet such as the Cessna Citation Latitude offers a cabin about 6 ft high and more baggage room.

Very light jets such as the HondaJet Elite II or Citation M2 Gen2 can fly the route with two or three passengers and light luggage, with a cabin under 5 ft high. Heavy jets are rarely needed for this distance.

Peak periods and onward transfers

Demand peaks around the Cannes Film Festival (12-23 May in 2026) and the Monaco Grand Prix (held in early June in 2026), and weekends in July and August are also busy. In these periods the constraints are slots and aircraft parking at Nice and Cannes, and operators may reposition aircraft elsewhere and charge for positioning legs.

From Nice, the helicopter hop to Monaco takes around seven minutes. For Saint-Tropez, options include a long drive from Nice, a helicopter transfer, or La Môle, whose 1,180 m runway admits only certain aircraft.

Indicative autumn 2026 pricing

Indicative autumn 2026 rates, per flight hour before VAT and excluding positioning, are about EUR 3,800-5,200 for a light jet and EUR 5,000-6,800 for a midsize jet. A two-hour leg therefore costs roughly EUR 7,600-10,400 in a light jet and EUR 10,000-13,600 in a midsize jet in flight time alone.

Airport charges, handling, catering and UK Air Passenger Duty are extra, and the duty rate for larger private jets rose sharply in April 2026. For return trips, costs differ depending on whether the aircraft waits on the Riviera or returns empty to London.

Industry impact & what to watch

On a sector this short and this popular, the binding constraints are on the ground. Nice is slot coordinated and Cannes caps take-off weight and excludes older, noisier types, so in peak weeks an operator's ability to secure arrival times and parking matters more than the number of suitable aircraft available.

That shapes how the economics work. Positioning legs and aircraft waiting on the Riviera versus returning empty to London can change the effective price of a trip well beyond the hourly rate, and the April 2026 rise in UK Air Passenger Duty for larger private jets adds a cost that sits outside the flight-hour quote.

For the next peaks, the Cannes Film Festival from 12-23 May and the Monaco Grand Prix in early June are the periods when slot scarcity and positioning charges will be most visible in what customers are quoted.
