Stephenville International Airport FBO Reopens Under New Ownership, Joins Avfuel Network

Why It MattersBranded fuel-network affiliation gives a reactivated regional airport instant access to loyalty and pricing programs that typically take independent FBOs years to build on their own.

What happened

The full-service FBO at Stephenville International Airport (CYJT) has resumed operations under new ownership and joined the Avfuel Network, expanding fuel programs and operational support for operators in Canada's North Atlantic region. Stephenville International Airport Corporation, backed by BTG Capital, acquired the airport in June 2026 following its closure, and the reopening marks a step in reactivating the site as a technical stop and service destination for domestic and international operators.

The airport was originally constructed in 1941 by the United States Army Air Force and sits in the St. George's Bay area of Newfoundland and Labrador. It features a 10,000-foot runway capable of accommodating large commercial and cargo aircraft. The FBO operates from a 20,000-square-foot terminal offering pilot and passenger lounges, a conference room with A/V capabilities seating 10, additional meeting rooms, complimentary refreshments, and a flight-planning space, along with 24/7 ground handling and personalized concierge support. Customs support is scheduled to become available in the fourth quarter of 2026.

By joining the Avfuel Network, the Stephenville FBO gives customers access to the AVTRIP rewards program, Avfuel Contract Fuel pricing, and the Avfuel Pro Card for single-transaction fuel and non-fuel purchases, with staff training supported through the Avfuel Training System. Jonathan Boyle, Avfuel's vice president of sales for contract fuel and bulk fuel, said "Stephenville International Airport is a unique facility, and Avfuel is thrilled to welcome its FBO to our branded network as it resumes service," adding that "its strategic location and infrastructure create tremendous potential for aviation growth." Andrew Gibbons, representative of airport ownership, said "we are incredibly excited to resume FBO operations at Stephenville International Airport and strengthen aviation services across Canada's North Atlantic region," and that "our partnership with Avfuel gives us access to the programs, resources and support needed to deliver the high-quality experience pilots, operators and passengers expect."

Industry impact & what to watch

A closed airport returning to service under new ownership and immediately affiliating with a branded fuel network is one way regional and North Atlantic technical-stop facilities try to re-establish credibility with operators quickly, rather than rebuilding a customer base from scratch. Branded networks like Avfuel work by bundling contract pricing, rewards, card programs and staff training into a single package, so a reopened FBO can offer pilots and dispatchers the same fuel-pricing and loyalty terms they already use elsewhere, lowering the friction of choosing an unfamiliar stop.

For Stephenville specifically, the runway length and terminal capacity point to ambitions beyond light general aviation, but full service still depends on the customs support slated for the fourth quarter of 2026 landing on schedule. Whether the site converts its infrastructure and network affiliation into sustained international and cargo traffic will depend on how quickly that customs capability comes online and how ownership markets the technical-stop role to operators planning North Atlantic routings.
