Syria Plans to Convert Mezzeh Military Airport for Limited Civilian and Executive Aviation

Syria's General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport is drawing up plans to convert Mezzeh Airport from a military facility into an airport serving limited civilian operations, with a focus on private and executive aviation, according to Mustafa Khairallah, head of the authority's Media Department, who spoke to state news agency SANA. He said the airport would complement Damascus International Airport under the plan, with preliminary work already under way, including rubble removal and upgrades to air navigation infrastructure, while authorities complete the technical and regulatory requirements needed to reclassify the airport.
Khairallah said the project would be carried out in stages in coordination with relevant national institutions, alongside technical, operational, environmental and regulatory studies. Assessments will take into account the surrounding urban area, noise levels, the nature and volume of air traffic, and legal and community considerations. He said the project is intended to support the development of Syria's civil aviation sector in line with established standards and international best practices.
