Piper Seneca PA-34-200 Lands Safely at Night in Rain After GEAR UNSAFE Warning Traced to Faulty Squat Switch

A Part 141 flight school's Piper Seneca PA-34-200 returned safely to its home airport in Florida after a "WARN GEAR UNSAFE" indication appeared during a night multi-engine training flight. The aircraft was operating in the practice area at the time.

The flight was conducted under the school's FAA-approved Multi-Engine Add-On course, which includes required night training. The flight instructor had more than 2,000 flight hours, and the student already held a Commercial Pilot Certificate.

The crew had performed repeated maneuvers involving landing gear extension and retraction before the warning came on while the gear was already in position. The aircraft landed safely at night in rain, and the warning was traced to a faulty squat switch.

Multi-engine add-on courses lean on repeated gear cycling, and each cycle works the switches and sensors that drive the unsafe-gear annunciation. A squat switch fault of this kind produces a warning that looks like a gear problem when the gear itself is likely down and locked, so crews need a rehearsed method for separating a false indication from a real one.

The outcome here, a safe night landing in rain, reflects an instructor with more than 2,000 hours and a student already holding a commercial certificate. For Part 141 schools, the same event with a less experienced pairing would test the abnormal-procedure training that the syllabus is meant to build.

For fleet owners, a squat switch is a cheap component with outsized operational consequences, since a failure can force a diversion or an in-flight emergency decision.
