Nine Killed as Learjet 60 Bound for the Bahamas Nosedives onto Florida Road; Victims Include Texas Couple, Two Children and Co-Pilot

Why It MattersA fatal accident involving a mature light-jet type at cruise altitude puts convective weather avoidance and in-flight breakup investigations in focus for operators of older business jets.

What happened

A Learjet 60 flying from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas plunged from the sky on Sunday and struck Military Trail, a major thoroughfare in Palm Beach County, Florida, shortly before 1 p.m. All nine people on board were killed, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. The impact left a large crater and burning debris. The National Transportation Safety Board said on Monday that one person on the ground sustained a leg injury; officials had earlier said no ground injuries were reported. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis called it "a cataclysmic plane crash."

Family members have identified eight of the victims: Adam Robinson, Helen Sharp and their two children, Emma and Charlie Robinson; Rachael Reed; Charmi Fehr; caregiver Anita Maria Cetina; and 20-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras. Authorities have not publicly identified the nine people on board, and no details have been released about the other pilot. Robinson, a tech entrepreneur who co-founded the email marketing platform Robly, and Sharp, a public relations professional and ceramics artist, lived in both Aspen, Colorado, and Austin, Texas.

Air traffic control recordings captured by LiveATC show that before the crash Filgueiras reported ice accumulating on the aircraft at an outside air temperature of -47 degrees Celsius, along with moderate turbulence that moved the plane by up to 700 feet. She then radioed "Mayday, mayday," reporting a descent of 10,000 feet per minute and then an overspeed condition at 20,000 feet per minute. ADS-B Exchange data show the jet fell 27,000 feet in one minute just before tracking data ended. The aircraft had been at about 35,000 feet.

The NTSB is investigating. Member Tom Chapman said there is some evidence the aircraft broke up before impact and that parts may be found some distance from the crash site. Senior Air Safety Investigator Tim Monville said the biggest obstacle will be recovering the major wreckage from the crater in the roadway. Weather at altitude is a major focus; scattered storms were in the area and the plane passed through a stronger storm cell a few minutes before the descent, though it is unclear whether the storm contributed. Maintenance records show a cockpit voice recorder was installed.

About 600 people need shelter because damage is blocking the entrance to a mobile home park, said county commissioner Joel Flores. It is the second deadliest US plane crash this year per NTSB records, after a June skydiving plane crash in Butler, Missouri that killed 12, and the deadliest involving a Learjet 60 per Flight Safety Foundation data.

Industry impact & what to watch

Accidents that combine high-altitude icing, turbulence and a rapid loss of control draw attention to how crews and operators handle convective weather at cruise. The recorded sequence, from an ice report to a mayday to a descent rate that climbed from 10,000 to 20,000 feet per minute, covers a very short span, which is why the investigation is concentrating on what the aircraft encountered and how its structure responded.

The NTSB's early indication that the aircraft may have broken up before impact shapes the work ahead. Wreckage spread over some distance, plus the difficulty of recovering the main pieces from the crater, means findings on structure and flight path will take time. The investigators have so far framed the weather as a focus without saying it contributed.

For the wider fleet of older light jets, the signals worth following are the NTSB's wreckage and recorder findings and any statement tying the storm cell to the descent. Until the board speaks to those points, conclusions about the type or its operation would be premature.
