Suvarnabhumi to Close Runway 02R/20L for 13 Hours on November 3 for Surface Repairs After Reported Aircraft Ground Incidents

Why It MattersBack-to-back ground incidents that force a hub's central runway offline show how little slack a three-runway airport has once surface condition, not traffic, starts dictating the daily capacity plan.

What happened

Airports of Thailand (AOT), which operates Suvarnabhumi Airport, has scheduled urgent repair work on runway 02R/20L. The central runway will be closed for 13 hours, from 7pm on November 3 until 8am on November 4.

Suvarnabhumi to Close Runway 02R/20L for 13 Hours on November 3 for Surface Repairs After Reported Aircraft Ground Incid

The work follows several aircraft ground incidents in October and an incident on the night of November 2, when an Emirates A380 encountered a section of subsided pavement near the threshold of runway 02R. The location was close to an area where a China Airlines aircraft experienced a wheel-related incident on October 28. Resolving the latest problem took more than an hour.

The repair window is fixed: 7pm on November 3 to 8am on November 4, with the runway out of service throughout.

Industry impact & what to watch

Two aircraft problems at neighbouring spots on the same runway within a week make pavement condition a capacity question as well as a safety one. A central runway taken out for 13 hours moves its share of arrivals and departures onto the remaining runways, and overnight windows are chosen because they cost the least traffic.

For airlines serving the airport, the practical effect is limited to the closure window itself, but heavy widebody types such as the A380 put the most load on any weakened surface, which is why repeated events at one location tend to end in a scheduled repair rather than a patch.

The next milestone is the 8am reopening on November 4. Whether the repair holds is judged by whether further ground incidents occur on 02R/20L after that point.
