Gulfstream G400 Used by Flávio Bolsonaro to Leave Argentina Belongs to Baires Fly, Linked to Alleged Trafficker's Former Partner

Why It MattersCharter operators that sell discreet, short-notice lift carry reputational exposure from the shareholders, intermediaries and clients behind each aircraft, and ownership-chain scrutiny can reach a fleet well beyond any single flight.

What happened

A Gulfstream G400 registered LV-JQW, operated by the Argentine charter company Baires Fly, carried Flávio Bolsonaro, his wife and two daughters from Argentina to Guayaquil, Ecuador, after his election loss to Lula. The account comes from Fórum Investiga, the investigative unit of Revista Fórum.

Argentina's National Directorate of Migration said the family crossed the border via the Tancredo Neves International Bridge, between Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazú, at 10:50 p.m. The aircraft took off at 12:22 a.m. The trip followed an order by Supreme Federal Cour…

Fórum Investiga, drawing on court documents and public records in Argentina and the United States, found that Sergio Daniel Mastropietro, a business intermediary for Baires Fly, was a business partner of Federico "Fred" Machado at SO VAIN S.A., an aviation-related company founded in 2010. Argentine investigations documented joint trips, business ties and a shared Buenos Aires address between the two. Machado was among eight people indicted by the US Department of Justice in February 2021 in a scheme involving drug trafficking, money laundering and financial fraud.

Baires Fly also appears in Argentina's National Disability Agency (ANDIS) corruption investigation, which is examining suspected contract steering, overbilling, bribery and money laundering under Javier Milei's government. In documents from the investigation led by federal prosecutor Franco Picardi, ANDIS suppliers Prolite Orthopedics and Probock transferred 95.06 million Argentine pesos (roughly $62,000) to a Baires Fly bank account on September 10, 2025, after Mastropietro sent the company's banking details to Miguel Ángel Calvete, identified as one of the operators behind the scheme.

Milei used a Baires Fly aircraft piloted by Grande to travel to the United States in November 2023. Mastropietro denied managing or formally belonging to Baires Fly, saying he acted only as an intermediary, and the company disputed any association with the money laundering allegations. The documents do not show that Bolsonaro was involved in the ANDIS scheme or in drug trafficking, nor that Machado had any role in arranging the flight.

Industry impact & what to watch

Charter is a business of discretion and speed: a client books a seat, an operator supplies a tail number and a crew, and the paperwork behind the aircraft stays out of view. That structure is why cases like this one surface the web of intermediaries, shareholders and former partners around an operator rather than the flight itself. For a segment that sells short-notice lift to high-profile passengers, the reputational exposure sits in who stands behind the company, not in the aircraft.

The documents link Baires Fly to several separate threads at once: a politically sensitive departure, a former business partnership with an indicted figure, and payments inside a corruption inquiry. None of those threads establishes that the flight itself was improper, and the records explicitly stop short of tying the passenger to the other matters. The practical lesson for the segment is about how ownership and intermediary relationships can attract attention to an operator whose aircraft was simply the one booked.

What would settle the picture is findings from the ANDIS investigation led by prosecutor Franco Picardi on the Baires Fly payments, and any response from the operator on Mastropietro's role. Those are the points that would show whether the charter operator's exposure stays reputational or becomes something more.
