Lockheed Martin Ventures Backs Elroy Air as PIPE Commitments Reach $175 Million

Why It MattersReservations and preorders from operators like Bristow signal demand for autonomous cargo aircraft, but conversion to firm sales and the pending public listing remain the real tests of the business case.

What happened

Lockheed Martin Ventures has participated in an expanded financing round for Elroy Air, an autonomous cargo aircraft developer, bringing total PIPE commitments to $175 million. The companies did not disclose the size of Lockheed Martin Ventures' individual commitment.

The funding is intended to help Elroy Air scale production of its Chaparral autonomous cargo aircraft, designed to carry more than 500 pounds without requiring a runway. Kratos Defense & Security Solutions plans to begin producing Chaparral in California in late 2026. Elroy Air recently secured a multiyear U.S. Army contract worth up to $46 million. Bristow Group has increased its early delivery reservations from five aircraft to 15 and holds a separate preorder agreement for up to 100 Chaparral aircraft.

Lockheed Martin Ventures, the investment arm of Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed Martin, previously backed Elroy Air's $40 million Series A round in 2021. Lockheed Martin doubled the size of its venture fund to $400 million in 2022. The two companies also announced intentions to collaborate on autonomous systems and business development for defense and commercial customers. The proposed merger that would take Elroy Air public remains subject to closing conditions, and reservations and preorders do not guarantee aircraft sales.

Industry impact & what to watch

This deal fits a broader push by defense primes to fund autonomous logistics platforms through venture arms rather than acquiring the technology outright, keeping the startup independent while securing early access and collaboration rights. Lockheed Martin Ventures returning to a company it first funded in 2021, alongside a doubled venture fund, points to sustained strategic interest in runway-free cargo delivery for contested or infrastructure-poor environments.

In this segment, early reservations and preorders such as Bristow's increase from five to 15 aircraft, plus its separate option for up to 100, function as demand signals rather than committed revenue; production capacity from a manufacturing partner like Kratos and a defense contract like the Army's up to $46 million award are the more concrete markers of progress. Whether that translates into deliveries depends on production ramp-up and the aircraft actually meeting certification and performance requirements.

The path to public markets via merger remains conditional on closing requirements, so the near-term marker to watch is whether that transaction completes, followed by whether Kratos begins production in California on the stated late-2026 timeline.
