Aspen-Pitkin County Airport Reopens After Over One-Hour Closure Due to Email Threat

Aspen-Pitkin County Airport in Colorado reopened Tuesday at approximately 4:00 p.m. after a closure of more than one hour prompted by an email threat directed at airport property. The evacuation began at about 2:30 p.m. after several staff members received the threatening email, airport spokesperson Kelsey Petersen said in a statement.

Approximately 55 passengers, 40 airline employees, TSA personnel, rental car employees, and other staff were evacuated. Petersen declined to provide further details about the threat, citing an ongoing investigation, and said law enforcement inspected the facility before clearing it for reopening. An Everbridge alert was issued just after 2:30 p.m., warning people to avoid the airport due to the law enforcement response. Colorado Highway 82 remained open in both directions throughout the closure, Petersen said.

A SkyWest Airlines flight scheduled to land in Aspen at approximately 3:00 p.m. was rerouted back to Denver, but later turned around and headed back toward Aspen, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.

Threats delivered by email or other anonymous channels force airports into a binary response regardless of credibility: evacuate, sweep, and hold until law enforcement clears the facility. That process alone produced the more than one-hour closure at Aspen, independent of whether the threat itself proves substantive.

Regional airports with a single terminal and limited alternate capacity feel this more acutely than large hubs, since one inbound flight being rerouted to Denver and back illustrates how quickly a localized threat response ripples into schedule disruption for connecting traffic.

What remains to be resolved is the outcome of the law enforcement investigation Petersen cited, which will determine whether the threat is deemed credible and whether any charges follow.
