NORAD Warns Pilots of Temporary Flight Restrictions Over Columbus and Chillicothe Areas on Oct. 27-28

Why It MattersShort-notice TFRs tied to presidential movements fall hardest on general and business aviation, making pre-flight NOTAM checks an operational requirement for flight departments serving Ohio and Texas airports.

NORAD is instructing pilots to check federal notices because fighter jets will enforce temporary flight restrictions it has imposed above the Columbus and Chillicothe, Ohio, areas on Tuesday, Oct. 27, and Wednesday, Oct. 28. The same restrictions apply over Corpus Christi and Lubbock, Texas, according to a NORAD release.

NORAD said its aircraft will respond to aircraft violating the TFRs and take the necessary action to gain compliance, a scenario it encourages all pilots to avoid. General aviation pilots are reminded to check notices to airmen (NOTAMs) before each flight, as required by the FAA. Pilots who violate restricted airspace may also be met by federal authorities on landing and could be subject to interview or further enforcement action, NORAD warned.

On Oct. 17, a NORAD F-16 fighter aircraft intercepted a general aviation aircraft over Cincinnati as President Donald Trump was visiting the area. NORAD said the aircraft was safely escorted out of the area. Pilots can access TFR information published by the FAA at tfr.faa.gov.
