Houthis Strike King Khalid International Airport and Saudi Sites; Flights Suspended

Why It MattersRepeated strikes near major Gulf hubs push airlines and insurers toward broader airspace avoidance and risk repricing even when individual closures are brief and localized.

What happened

Flight operations at Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport (RUH) were suspended on Monday evening after Yemen's Houthi movement claimed a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks on the Saudi capital and other targets across the kingdom. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree announced three separate operations, saying the first targeted King Khalid International Airport and halted air traffic at what he described as one of the busiest airports in the Gulf.

Saree said the second operation struck an Aramco refinery at Rabigh on the Red Sea coast, which the Houthis said caught fire, while a third hit Abha Airport, the Khamis Mushait military base and Akfa camp in the southern Asir region. He said additional sites in Najran and Jazan, near the Yemeni border, were also struck, and that the operations used a large number of ballistic and cruise missiles. Loud explosions were heard across Riyadh on Monday evening. Saree also warned international airlines that Saudi airspace now sits within the Houthis' declared area of operations, exempting only the skies over Mecca and Medina.

A Saudi energy source told AFP that a separate attack on Sunday had again halted pumping on the East-West pipeline to the Red Sea, a key conduit for Saudi exports since Iran blockaded the Strait of Hormuz. Representatives of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey held an emergency meeting in Riyadh on Monday under a joint defence pact signed in August and agreed to deploy forces to the kingdom. A spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was "deeply concerned by the sharp escalation in fighting" and condemned the continued Houthi cross-border attacks on Saudi Arabia. The United Nations says more than 184,000 people have been displaced by the fighting in Yemen. The attacks on Riyadh came a day after Yemen's government announced its goal of retaking all territory held by the Houthis.

Industry impact & what to watch

This episode extends a pattern of attacks reaching into Saudi airspace that has already disrupted operations at Riyadh and Jeddah for weeks, now adding a direct hit claimed against King Khalid International Airport itself rather than only airspace transit. When a Gulf hub halts operations even briefly, the effect ripples beyond the airport: connecting itineraries, cargo schedules and crew rotations all absorb the disruption, and airlines routing through or near the affected airspace must weigh diversions against fuel and time costs.

The Houthis' explicit declaration that Saudi airspace falls within their operations area, barring only Mecca and Medina, raises the stakes for carriers and insurers assessing overflight risk versus avoidance. Combined with the reported halt to pumping on the East-West pipeline and the deployment agreement among Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey under their August defence pact, the incident sits at the intersection of aviation security, energy logistics and regional military posture.

What happens next will depend on whether RUH operations resume quickly, as prior disruptions have, or whether the warning to international airlines prompts broader rerouting around Saudi airspace. The UN's condemnation and the trilateral defence response are the two signals worth tracking for whether this remains episodic or marks a shift in how carriers treat the corridor.
