Honda Aircraft Delays HondaJet Echelon First Flight to 2028, Certification to 2031

What happened
Honda Aircraft has completed the first wing structure for its HondaJet Echelon light jet at its Greensboro, North Carolina headquarters, alongside a revised development schedule that pushes major milestones back by two years. First flight, previously targeted for 2026, is now planned for 2028, with type certification and deliveries pushed to 2031.
Construction of the first Echelon wing began in February 2025. Honda Aircraft said five major components for the first aircraft are currently in manufacturing, with 70% of required parts now on hand, and it expects to assemble the first Echelon early next year. The company attributed the schedule adjustment to Tier 1 supplier-related delays and ongoing development activities, stating the updated timeline "reflects Tier 1-supplier-related schedule adjustments and ongoing development activities, ensuring the aircraft meets the highest standards of quality and performance." Vinicius Souza, assistant program leader for the Echelon program, said, "We have made significant progress on the design side... so we are mostly on the industrialization side of the program at this point."
The single-pilot HA-480 Echelon is designed to bridge the gap between light jets and midsize jets, offering a projected four-passenger range of 2,625 nm, a 450-knot cruise speed, a maximum altitude of FL470, and seating for up to 11 occupants. It is powered by Williams International FJ44-4C turbofan engines and will feature a Garmin avionics suite, sharing the over-the-wing engine mount configuration of the HA-420 HondaJet and designed to be certified as an amendment to that aircraft's type certificate. Features include autothrottles, autobrakes, a runway overrun awareness and alerting system, and Honda Aircraft's advanced steering augmentation system.
The program was first introduced as the HondaJet 2600 Concept at NBAA-BACE 2021 by then-president and CEO Michimasa Fujino, with formal commercialization announced in June 2023 by his successor, president and CEO Hideto Yamasaki. Amod Kelkar, senior vice president, chief commercial officer, and Echelon program leader, said, "With more than 530 signed letters of intent, enthusiasm from customers around the world remains exceptionally strong."
