Wind Delays Las Vegas Arrivals, Storms Slow Florida Departures as Other Major US Hubs Run Normally

Why It MattersWeather-driven restrictions concentrated at a few airports show how a national system can stay mostly on time while individual stations absorb disruption that ripples through local arrival and departure flows.

What happened

A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Airspace System status snapshot taken Sunday evening, November 1, 2026, at 7:08pm Eastern showed eight of the 30 monitored US airports reporting active delays or ground stops. The remaining 22 airports were running on time.

Las Vegas was under a wind-related ground delay program averaging about 49 minutes, the most significant delay in the snapshot. In Florida, departure delays averaged about 31 minutes at both Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, and about 15 minutes at Miami.

Fort Myers had thunderstorm-related restrictions that were not quantified. An earlier ground delay program had also been in place at Fort Lauderdale.

Industry impact & what to watch

A snapshot like this one shows how air traffic management works in practice: the system rarely slows as a whole, and restrictions are applied airport by airport according to local conditions. Here wind at one Western station and thunderstorms across a Florida cluster accounted for the disruption, while the other monitored airports kept their normal flow.

Ground delay programs hold aircraft at their origin to match arrival rates at the affected airport, so a delay at one field can push late arrivals and displaced rotations onto later flights elsewhere. Operators whose schedules touch Las Vegas or the Florida airports would see the effects first, even though most of the national picture was unaffected.

The next FAA status updates would show whether the Las Vegas wind program and the Florida thunderstorm restrictions were extended or lifted.
