GE Aerospace Wins DIU Contract to Develop Derecho Mach 5 Hypersonic Test Vehicle

GE Aerospace has been awarded a contract by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to develop Derecho, an air-launched hypersonic test vehicle designed to reach speeds of Mach 5 and above. The award funds the next major phase of the Pentagon's Hypersonic and High-Cadence Airborne Testing Capabilities (HyCAT) program and builds on initial concept and subsystem design work begun in 2023. The financial value of the contract has not been disclosed.

Under the agreement, GE Aerospace will carry out full vehicle integration and component-level qualification testing for critical subsystems. The Derecho platform uses an all-up-round architecture pairing a high-thrust rocket booster with a high-speed cruiser system: once the booster accelerates the vehicle to initial supersonic speeds, the cruiser switches to GE Aerospace's dual-mode ramjet technology to sustain hypersonic velocities at Mach 5. The liquid-fueled vehicle is a modular testbed meant to evaluate heat-resistant materials, sensors, and flight controls under hypersonic conditions.
DIU selected GE Aerospace to address what it described as a shortage of low-cost, repeatable hypersonic flight testing opportunities, with HyCAT aiming to increase the frequency of airborne hypersonic tests through commercial innovation and agile prototyping. Steve "Doogie" Russell, Vice President and General Manager of Edison Works at GE Aerospace, said acceleration in this type of testing is critical to advancing next-generation capabilities at speed and scale, and that the work builds on years of investment toward a flexible, responsive test solution for national defense priorities. Successful subsystem qualification is expected to clear the way for routine hypersonic flight demonstrations in the coming years.
