Naples Capodichino Airport to Close to All Flights for All of November 2026; Travelers Rerouted via Salerno and Rome

Why It MattersA month-long shutdown of the Amalfi Coast's main gateway tests how far Salerno and Rome Fiumicino can absorb diverted demand, and shows how single-runway airports concentrate disruption risk.

The Traveler

Naples Capodichino Airport, the main international gateway to the Amalfi Coast, will be closed to all air traffic from 00:00 on 1 November 2026 until 23:59 on 30 November 2026. The closure is for extensive renovation of the airport's only runway and several taxiways, part of a wider safety and capacity modernization plan. Because the airport has a single runway, a partial closure was not considered feasible, so all commercial flights are suspended for the month. Every airline and route using Naples is affected, including services from London, Paris, Munich and Barcelona and flights from other Italian cities. Some carriers have removed Naples from their November schedules, while others have rerouted flights to Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport (QSR) or are rebooking passengers, particularly long-haul travelers, via Rome Fiumicino (FCO). Passengers whose flights are cancelled are generally entitled to a refund, and in some cases rebooking, depending on fare and applicable rules.

The closure applies only to air traffic. Naples city, its central railway station and its port remain operational, so travelers can still reach Naples by high-speed train from Rome, Milan or Florence and use ferries to destinations such as Sorrento and Capri when seasonal services run. Travelers arriving from 1 December 2026 are not affected, though residual schedule changes are possible.

Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport, near Pontecagnano Faiano about 20 kilometers south of Salerno city, is acting as a partial alternative, with both terminals in use in November 2026. A taxi to central Salerno takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes and typically costs about 30 to 40 euros. From Salerno, ferries to Amalfi take about 35 to 40 minutes, with Positano a further 25 to 30 minutes, at fares commonly of 10 to 20 euros, though frequency is reduced in early November; SITA Sud buses to Amalfi take 75 to 90 minutes or more.

Via Rome Fiumicino, travelers can take the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini (about 32 minutes, around 14 euros one way), then a high-speed train to Naples Centrale (as fast as 1 hour 10 minutes, advance fares sometimes 25 to 35 euros in second class) or to Salerno (about 2 hours). From Naples, the Circumvesuviana line to Sorrento takes about one hour, and shuttle buses to Sorrento have recently cost around 13 euros one way.
