Australian Airlines Propose Shutting Sydney Airport ATC at Night

Australian airlines have proposed suspending air traffic control operations at Sydney Airport overnight, according to the proposal under discussion. Sydney Airport already operates under a curfew from 2300L to 0600L local time (1300Z–2000Z), during which scheduled flights are restricted.

Under the existing curfew rules, flights operating under emergency conditions or those carrying medical patients are currently exempt and permitted to operate during the curfew window. A suspension of ATC during those same hours could create problems for exactly these exempt flight categories, since emergency and medical flights would still need air traffic control support to operate safely during the hours in question.

This proposal sits at the intersection of cost management and safety-critical exceptions that recur wherever airports operate under a curfew. Curfews are designed to limit noise and traffic during set hours, but they typically carry carve-outs for emergencies and medical transport precisely because those operations cannot be scheduled around a closed window.

The practical question is whether ATC coverage can be reduced during curfew hours without removing the operational support that the emergency and medical exemptions were written to preserve. If night ATC is suspended, exempt flights would need some alternative means of receiving traffic separation and clearances, or the exemption becomes difficult to exercise in practice.
