Electra Signs Airframe Manufacturing Agreement With Atlas Group for Hybrid-Electric EL9

Virginia-based Electra has signed an airframe agreement with The Atlas Group, under which Atlas will manufacture and assemble airframes for the EL9 Ultra Short, Electra's nine-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft, to support its flight test and certification program. Work is scheduled to begin in September, with first airframe deliveries expected in 2027, consistent with Electra's previously stated target of a debut flight in 2027 or 2028 and entry into commercial service in 2030.

The EL9 is designed to take off and land within 150 feet, enabling operations from compact access points such as general aviation airports, rooftops, parking lots, fields, barges, and other non-traditional sites. Electra validated that performance using the two-seat EL2 Goldfinch demonstrator, which began real-world operational trials in Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania in August under a contract with the FAA expected to span at least three years.
The FAA approved a G-1 certification basis for the EL9 design in July, establishing a formal certification roadmap under Part 23 regulations covering the aircraft's blown-lift aerodynamics, distributed electric propulsion, and digital fly-by-wire control systems. A subsequent G-2 issue paper, once approved, will define how Electra must demonstrate compliance, and Atlas-built airframes can then be used for certification testing.
Key suppliers include Safran Helicopter Engines, which will provide the turbogenerator built around the Arrano gas turboshaft engine and a pair of Safran Electrical & Power GENeUS electric generators; Evolito, which will supply eight hybrid-electric engines; and Honeywell, whose flight control computers will underpin the fly-by-wire system.
In July, Electra named Springfield, Ohio, as the site of the first EL9 production facility, with a planned investment of $850 million and annual output capacity of up to 800 aircraft. The company estimates demand of 12,000 to 16,000 aircraft within the first decade of operation and currently holds more than 2,200 provisional orders from more than 60 operators worldwide, including Bristow Group, which in January signed a multimillion-dollar predelivery payment agreement covering five aircraft plus options for 45 more.
Atlas conducts advanced manufacturing of complex aerostructures at facilities in Kansas, Utah, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Mexico. Electra stated that the agreement's goal is to "mature the EL9 production architecture, reduce manufacturing risk, and build the industrial foundation needed to scale output after certification."
