What happened
Jersey Airport has been awarded Level 4 transformation status by Airport Carbon Accreditation, a global carbon management certification programme for airports. Ports of Jersey, which operates the airport, said the accreditation reflects its commitment to achieve net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030.
Sophie Alexander, the airport's head of sustainability and community, described the award as "a huge achievement" that demonstrated "a fundamental shift" in the way the site operates. Initiatives recognised under the accreditation include replacing vehicles and equipment, converting terminal heating to hydro-treated vegetable oil, introducing a private and business aviation decarbonisation charge to fund future carbon reduction projects, and investing in energy efficiency measures such as LED lighting and smart metering.
Ports of Jersey said it would continue to invest in low-carbon technologies.

That charge is the detail worth watching: an airport funding its net-zero programme by levying business aviation traffic directly links a sustainability certification to added cost per movement for operators and brokers using that field, a mechanism other regional airports pursuing similar accreditation could copy.
Whether other airports adopt a comparable decarbonisation charge, and how Ports of Jersey structures and discloses it, will determine whether this becomes a template or stays a single-airport measure.
