GE Aerospace to Invest $225 Million in Niskayuna R&D Center Over Five Years

GE Aerospace plans to spend $225 million over the next five years to expand and upgrade its research and development center in Niskayuna, New York, the company announced. Joseph Vinciquerra, general manager and senior executive director of research at GE Aerospace, said the investment will modernize the campus's R&D capabilities across areas including artificial intelligence, autonomy, robotics, advanced materials manufacturing, hypersonic propulsion, and hybrid-electric flight.
Empire State Development offered GE Aerospace $8.42 million in Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits, contingent on the creation of 75 new jobs, while the Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority is providing a state sales tax exemption on construction materials used at the site. Vinciquerra said the investment also includes expanding workforce development partnerships with SUNY and area trade schools and community colleges to build a skilled-trades training pipeline. The company noted the project attracted interest from other states before New York secured it.
The Niskayuna research center, which GE opened in 1950, serves as what Vinciquerra called "the front door" to GE Aerospace from a technological standpoint. Current commercial engine development at the center includes the GE9X, designed for the Boeing 777X, and the RISE open-fan engine, while defense work spans jet engines for combat aircraft, helicopter engines, and technologies for uncrewed aircraft, hypersonics, and advanced combustion. GE Aerospace reported $13.3 billion in revenue and $2.8 billion in profit for the second quarter of 2026, with a combined commercial aviation and defense order backlog of $210 billion as of July.
