Engineers on maturing programs must balance weight reduction against structural integrity, higher power density against heat and electromagnetic compatibility, and aviation reliability standards against growing electrical complexity, with each design decision affecting manufacturability, maintenance, certification, and fleet economics.

BAE Systems identified certification as critical, saying that integrating regulatory considerations from the earliest development stages reduces program risk and speeds the path from laboratory innovation to operational service. It described Farnborough 2026 as an inflection point for the industry, with electrified propulsion transitioning toward practical aircraft applications and new challenges centred on system integration, industrialisation, and lifecycle performance.
