Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) recorded 10,031 departure flights from Australian cities between 15 June and 12 September 2026, counted on an operator-complete-flight basis, meaning one full flight equals one departure rather than separate takeoff and landing movements at an airport.

Adelaide led the top ten departure cities with 990 flights, followed by Brisbane with 634, Perth with 426, Dubbo with 286, and Bundaberg Regional Council with 261. Alice Springs recorded 251 departures.
On 24 August 2026, planned capacity at Adelaide Airport was disclosed, calling for four daytime aircraft and three night-time aircraft, including one dedicated emergency-response aircraft. Separately, on 7 September 2026, RFDS Queensland Section announced the purchase of six King Air 260C aircraft, scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2030 to replace ageing King Air B200 fleet members. The order was characterised as fleet modernisation rather than confirmed expansion of outback-base operations.

This pattern reflects a common tension in specialist air-medical operations: departure volumes and base-capacity plans move on one timeline, while replacement-aircraft deliveries move on another, and the two do not automatically align. In this segment, near-term scheduling and MRO planning depend on the aircraft actually on the line, not on the fleet an operator has ordered for years ahead.
Here, Adelaide's planned four daytime and three night-time aircraft, including one emergency-response aircraft, must be sustained largely by the existing King Air B200s until the 260C deliveries begin in 2028. That leaves B200 availability and Adelaide's day-and-night coverage as the operational points most exposed to disruption in the interim, since any dip in serviceable B200s falls directly on the base's stated capacity target.
Available evidence does not support attributing the current departure growth primarily to mission expansion at inland bases such as Dubbo, Bundaberg or Alice Springs. Base-level mission-cycle counts, patient-transfer volumes, and data on newly stationed aircraft would be needed to draw a firmer conclusion about what is driving the overall flight count.
