Cannes-Mandelieu vs Nice Côte d'Azur: Aircraft Weight Limit, Operating Hours and Final Destination Decide the Right Private Jet Airport

Why It MattersOn the Riviera, airport choice is set by certified aircraft weight, published operating hours and the traveller's final destination, so the nearest field is not automatically the right one for a trip.

What happened

A private jet guide to the Côte d'Azur sets Cannes-Mandelieu (CEQ/LFMD) against Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE/LFMN). Runway and aircraft-limit figures in the guide come from the French aeronautical information publication for Cannes and Nice, effective October 29, 2026.

Cannes-Mandelieu vs Nice Côte d'Azur: Aircraft Weight Limit, Operating Hours and Final Destination Decide the Right Priv

Cannes-Mandelieu's main runway 17/35 is 1,540 m long. Jets with a certified maximum takeoff weight above 35 metric tons are prohibited, and so are turboprops above 22 metric tons. The limit applies to certified weight, so carrying less fuel or fewer passengers does not make an over-limit jet eligible. The airport's own hangar information describes accommodation for aircraft up to Embraer Legacy size. Published air traffic control hours begin at 08:00 local time, with seasonal closing between 20:00 and 22:00, while the FBO opens at 06:30. Slots are required during notified coordination periods.

Nice has two parallel runways of 2,628 m and 2,963 m and no equivalent blanket 35-ton jet restriction. The airport lists air traffic services and customs and immigration around the clock, but nighttime noise restrictions still affect aircraft eligibility. Nice is a coordinated airport, with slots arranged through the handler, and turnarounds over four hours require airport approval. Its Business Aviation Terminal covers 1,510 square meters, with its own customs control point and departure security checkpoints. The listed handlers are AviaVIP, Signature Aviation and DC Aviation G-OPS.

Ground and air transfers differ by destination. Antibes Tourism estimates 20–40 minutes from Nice Airport to Antibes when the road is clear. For Monaco, Monacair advertises about seven minutes in the air from Nice, with departures every 30 minutes beginning at 08:15 and the last service before nightfall. For Saint-Tropez, helicopter connections run from Nice and Toulon to Grimaud heliport, followed by a car. Cannes' Sea Valet advertises a private shuttle to Port du Béal in five minutes, with booking requested 72 hours ahead.

The guide also works through an illustrative calculation using assumed times. An 11:30 Cannes arrival, with 20 minutes from airport to car and a 20-minute drive, reaches the hotel at 12:10. An 11:00 Nice arrival, with 20 minutes to the car and a 45-minute drive, arrives at 12:05. With the same 11:00 arrival at both airports, Cannes would reach the hotel at 11:40 versus 12:05 via Nice.

Industry impact & what to watch

On the Côte d'Azur the first filter is aircraft eligibility, not convenience. Because the Cannes cap is written against certified maximum takeoff weight, a large-cabin jet cannot be made to fit by flying light. That makes the choice a fleet question that has to be settled before any scheduling comparison begins, and it explains why Nice absorbs the heavier long-range traffic by default.

The second filter is the clock. Cannes' air traffic control hours start at 08:00 and close seasonally between 20:00 and 22:00, while Nice publishes round-the-clock air traffic and customs services, tempered by noise restrictions at night. For early departures and late arrivals this matters more than a short drive. The guide's own sample timings show the same point from the other side: the airport closer to the hotel only wins if the aircraft is eligible and the arrival time falls inside its operating window.

The practical test is therefore three checks together: aircraft weight, slot and operating hours, and the final destination. Monaco and Saint-Tropez trips lean on helicopter links from Nice, while Cannes and Antibes trips can favour the smaller field. The next piece of information that would change a given plan is the airport's notified coordination periods and the handler's slot confirmation, since both can override a schedule that looks workable on paper.
