LNAV/VNAV minimums are a relatively uncommon GPS approach category in the United States, though standard in regions lacking WAAS infrastructure, and U.S. pilots may encounter them when an LPV approach automatically downgrades due to insufficient satellite signal quality, requiring real-time adaptability in the cockpit.

LNAV/VNAV GPS Approach Minimums: What Pilots Need to Know About Automatic Downgrade

Unlike LPV guidance, which becomes progressively more sensitive as an aircraft nears the runway threshold, LNAV/VNAV approaches present vertical guidance through a magenta pentagon symbol operating within a fixed 75-foot vertical window. Pilots must actively monitor their GPS receiver's annunciator, which may display LPV, L/VNAV, or LNAV, since the system can silently downgrade the approach category based on prevailing signal conditions.

The practical significance of this was illustrated during a solar storm, when an approach filed under LPV minimums automatically downgraded to LNAV/VNAV because of degraded satellite signal quality. LNAV/VNAV minimums also appear at a small number of airports that have RNAV (GPS) approaches with LNAV/VNAV but no LPV minimums published.
