NASA is preparing its X-59 experimental supersonic aircraft for an acoustic validation phase of testing, in which researchers will measure the aircraft's supersonic acoustic signature to confirm it produces a quiet "thump" rather than a conventional sonic boom.

In a recent test flight in late August, the X-59 flew for a total of 72 minutes, reaching a speed of Mach 1.2 and an altitude of approximately 49,000 feet. As with previous test flights, a NASA F-15 chase plane accompanied the aircraft for monitoring, though its own sonic booms have so far obscured any sound produced by the X-59 itself.

NASA describes the upcoming acoustic validation phase, in which that limitation will no longer apply, as the "biggest benchmark" for the X-59 program. The aircraft is designed to break the sound barrier without generating a loud sonic boom, and if confirmed to perform as intended, it could help pave the way for commercial supersonic flight over land.
